Midsummer is the longest day of the year. From this day until the winter solstice the days become shorter and the nights longer. The sun wanes as it makes its return journey from the Tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere back to the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere.
Midsummer has traditionally been a time of celebration and feasting, with balefires and bonfires at crossroads and on hilltops or anywhere that people gather and since ancient times Midsummer celebrations have begun with Midsummer Eve; the evening of the herbs. Herbs and flowers gathered on Midsummer Eve are believed to be especially potent and are hung on doors and placed in homes to protect the house and all who dwell within. Men wear chaplets of oak leaves and women wear circlets of flowers and clover, even pets and livestock may be adorned with garlands of flowers and foliage, and swimming or bathing in rivers or springs on Midsummer is believed to bring healing and protection.
Join us this year as we gather at Our Haven for a celebration of Midsummer with a pitch-in feast on Midsummer Eve and dancing and drumming around the bonfire with Our Haven family and friends. Bring your drums and musical instruments! Ritual dress and costume are encouraged through the day, and clothing is optional from 10:00 pm till dawn.
